I wish I could post a recent picture of Roger Curtis smiling the sweet smile I remember from his days as a member of the Masonic youth organization known as DeMolay. He was everybody's little brother. Roger, like both of his parents and older brothers, went on to serve our country. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army. He worked many years as a truck driver - eating a steady diet of gas station hot dogs and chips and what-not. Unhealthy habits caught up with him at an early age as depression and other demons sunk in. For the past year, Roger has been on the wait list for a new liver. Yes, he brought most of his problems upon himself - but at the end of it all...the only thing we can do is feel compassion for his soul. And while there are safety nets for veterans in terms of VA care, etc. Roger is the poster boy for those who fall through the cracks. He even found himself homeless at one point and that's how he ended up in Kokomo. Even though he was receiving Medicaid - it was not the type that assists with burial benefits. So, here we are, $500 in trustee assistance, $100 from Indiana soldier burial, a free lot and VA marker at Mount Hope and hopefully some money from the VA for transportation and burial expense. Today, at 2 p.m. we will lay his cremated remains to rest at Mount Hope Cemetery. This is one of those "there but for the grace of God go I" moments when we realize how fortunate we are and yet feel a great sadness and emptiness for the Roger's of this world. There won't be many gathered today, the Honor Guard and a few family members. You are welcome to join us. If you are able to throw a few bucks on this fund - 100% goes towards his final expenses as we absorb the processing fees. Say a prayer for Roger's soul - that he has finally found peace that eluded him for so long in the arms of our Heavenly Father. Thank you for showing compassion to "the least of these, my brethren," as Christ would say.
